Freshman

Freshman Timeline

FALL SEMESTER-

  • Attend the Freshman Orientation in August! See the presentation of Making High School Count in the auditorium!
  • Make this year count! It sets the stage for the next three years and it really has a huge impact on what options you have available after high school. Do the best you can! It is very difficult to raise your GPA later!
  • Make sure you are signed up for academically challenging courses! All schedule changes must be complete prior to school starting. Get to know your way around. Learn the rules, regulations, and important places of the school. Do you know where your LST is?
  • Meet your counselor! Develop a working relationship with them because they are your guides through high school.
  • Develop a four-year plan! Be aware of the graduation requirements and college admissions suggestions (4 years English, 3 years in math, science, and social studies, and 2 years in a foreign language). Review this plan periodically and adjust as necessary.
  • Get involved! There is something for everybody! Make new friends! Studies show that students who get involved in extra-curricular activities have a more successful and enjoyable high school career. See your counselor and listen to or read the Daily Bulletin online for opportunities.
  • Read Avoiding High School Quicksand. Take a look at your study habits. Are the study habits you had in junior high enough to make you successful in high school? What study habits do you need to change or improve on?
  • Go to Skills for Success. Activate your Family Connection account and take the Personality Assessment. Take a tour of the CRC with your Skills for Success class. Some students may be scheduled for Skills for Success second semester, but you're always welcome to come in, look around, or just hang out -- we're pretty friendly (and we often have snacks!).
  • Visit Career Cruising, our internet software designed to help explore, research and plan for careers and life after high school.

SPRING SEMSETER -

  • Check out the College Resource Center (CRC). Start thinking about careers. Keep using Career Cruising to explore possible career interest areas.
  • Check out the book "Do What You Are" and investigate your personality type further. Find out how your personality type affects your career choice and future satisfaction with your career choice.
  • Stay focused! Keep your grades up and continue to explore your post-high school options. Where do you see yourself as a senior? How are you going to get there?
  • Choose your courses for your sophomore year. This is a very important activity! Talk to your friends and family. Especially, talk with your teachers because their recommendations carry a lot of weight! It is difficult and sometimes impossible to change your curriculum choices at a later date.
  • Start planning your summer. The CRC collects information of various summer enrichment activities. Come check out our Summer Box!
