Libertyville High football coach Randy Kuceyeski recently was named the first recipient of the Randy Walker Coaches Award.
This award will be given annually on behalf of the American Football Coaches Foundation and the Randy Walker family to an Illinois high-school football coach who has demonstrated the following qualities and characteristics throughout his career:
• Achieves a winning tradition, not only on the football field, but in life.
• Serves as a role model and mentor to recognize the importance of academic achievement as well as athletic development.
• Teaches by example the importance of effort, attitude, discipline, persistence and dedication.
• Gives back to the community and profession as a leader off the field.
Walker was the football coach at Northwestern University from 1999-2005, taking the Wildcats to three bowl games in seven seasons. Then, in June of 2006, as preparations were beginning for the next season, he died suddenly of an apparent heart attack at age 52.
The Randy Walker Coaches Award was created to pay tribute to prep coaches in this state who maintained the same values as Walker had on and off the field.
"Coach Kuceyeski has made a big impact on so many people's lives. It's something for which he should be very proud. Football is a wonderful game and it certainly has enriched both of our families' lives," said Tammy Walker, who was married to Randy Walker for 30 years.
Kuceyeski has been head coach at Libertyville for 16 years. His 2003 team placed second in the state and his 2004 team won the IHSA Class 7A state title.
He recently was selected by the National Football League to represent the state of Illinois at the National Youth Development Summit in Canton, Ohio in July. Coach Kuceyeski and his wife, Martha, have four children and six grandchildren.
