English Learner Services
Welcome to the English Learner (EL) Department! District 128 welcomes students from all over the world, with District 128 alumni living and working around the globe. Our department includes English Language Specialist teachers across content areas and courses whose goal is to support students as they acquire academic English; at the same time, the Libertyville and Vernon Hills High Schools EL Department strongly encourages families to maintain their cultural and heritage identities, which includes growing their home language. Multilingualism is a superpower!
Our educational philosophy is based on three key tenets: that EL students should learn alongside their grade level peers when appropriate, that language and content cannot be separated, and that–as much as possible–we will integrate content and language in blended general education classrooms to support equitable access, rigor, and shared student experiences.
Our curriculum design applies the WIDA English Language Development Standards and Common Core Standards through the Illinois Learning Standards to support our students for their college and career readiness goals. Finally, our courses have a special focus to build students' skills across different facets of language acquisition: listening, reading, speaking, and writing.
In addition to the rigorous academic learning we develop and instruct, the EL Department also strives to demonstrate our belief in and support of our newer students to share their strengths as they learn about and find belonging in the cultural and social aspects of our schools.
