Link Crew

How Link Crew Makes a Difference
1. Eases the Transition into High School:
Starting high school can be overwhelming for freshmen due to new academic expectations, social environments, and increased responsibilities. A mentoring program provides incoming students with guidance and support from experienced upperclassmen who understand these challenges, helping freshmen adjust more smoothly.
2. Builds a Supportive School Community:
Mandatory mentoring fosters connections between students across different grade levels. This sense of community encourages freshmen to feel more welcome and less isolated, promoting a positive school culture where students look out for one another.
3. Improves Academic Performance and Engagement:
Mentors can offer advice on effective study habits, time management, and navigating course selections, which can help freshmen develop strong academic skills early on. Students who feel supported are more likely to stay engaged and motivated in their studies.

Link Crew is a nationally recognized program that pairs junior and senior students with freshmen to help ease the transition into high school. All freshmen attend Link Crew twice a week for the first semester of high school, during half of their lunch period. Throughout the semester, through team building and activities, leaders provide guidance and support to the freshmen on topics such as navigating the school environment, getting involved, academic supports and more. The leaders build a safe and supportive community within their Link Crew groups, which encourages the freshmen to feel more comfortable and welcome into high school.

4. Encourages Personal Growth and Responsibility:
Both mentors and mentees benefit from the program. Freshmen gain confidence and social skills, while mentors develop leadership qualities and a sense of responsibility. Making the program mandatory ensures all students have equal access to these growth opportunities.
5. Reduces Behavioral Issues and Dropout Rates:
Students who feel connected and supported are less likely to engage in risky behaviors or consider dropping out. Mentoring programs provide a proactive approach to identifying and addressing challenges before they escalate.
6. Promotes Inclusivity and Diversity:
Mandatory participation ensures that all freshmen, regardless of background or social group, have access to support networks. This helps break down social barriers and promotes a more inclusive environment.
7. Prepares Students for Future Success:
Early exposure to mentorship teaches freshmen valuable interpersonal and communication skills that benefit them beyond high school, preparing them for college, careers, and lifelong relationships.
