Team Leader Philosophy for Discipline

The Team Leaders at LHS serve to use discipline as a learning experience and means to model and create positive student behaviors and help students understand the connection between their personal behaviors and their individual and academic success.  The Team Leaders strive to achieve these goals by forming strong relationships with students, the staff, parents, and the community, providing a fair, caring environment, and employing a team approach to discipline that utilizes all school resources to create positive behavioral changes that meet the needs of each individual student and respective situation.  Using a team approach, accessing all resources at hand, Team Leaders assist students to reflect upon their behavior, understand the immediate and future impact of their decisions, develop strategies for making better decisions in the future, and create a learning experience that transcends mere punitive measures and strives to create positive behavioral change.          

Team Leaders

• Believe fairness, relationships, discipline, decision-making, positive intervention, caring, sensitivity to cultural differences, building on student strengths, the team concept, and communication with all parties promote well-rounded students and the well-being of school safety.
• Strive to build strong relationships with students and staff and serve as a behavioral resource.
• Serve as role models to the students as a resource for appropriate behavior.
• Use all resources and a team approach to promote, encourage and build positive student behavior.
• Create change in student behavior, help students mature emotionally, personally, and academically into responsible young adults capable of making logical decisions and understanding the impact of their decisions on themselves and others.
• Support students fairly, listen to each matter, and make decisions that create positive behavioral changes that best meet the individual needs of each student and circumstance.
• Assist students in reflecting upon their behavior, understand the effect of their decisions and develop strategies and choices to make better future decisions.
• Help students recognize the long term effects of their behavior and relate their decisions to future and see the potential impact of their decisions as adults and in their other roles in life outside of school such as family, workplace, and in peer groups.

Counseling Department Philosophy

The mission of the LHS Counseling Department is to provide a comprehensive, developmental counseling program addressing the academic, career, and personal/social development of all students. School counselors are student advocates who provide support to maximize their students' personal growth, potential, and academic achievements. Partnering with other educators and family members, school counselors facilitate the support system to ensure all students are equipped with the knowledge and the skills to function as productive members of society.

To successfully implement the school counseling program at Libertyville High School, the counselors are committed to the following beliefs:

We believe:

• All students will have access to the school counseling program.
• The school counseling program will be consistent with the expected developmental stages of learning.
• School counseling program activities will be planned and coordinated by the counseling staff.
• The school counseling department will be comprised of state-certified, masters-level counselors.
• Counselors will be available to all students to discuss academic, social and personal matters.
• All students will have access to information about occupational and education planning.
• A counselor's role is to create relationships to help families navigate the challenges of high school and make plans for the future.
• The student and parents are responsible for monitoring the student's educational progress with the assistance of a certified school counselor.
• Counselors are available to assist students and families in making decisions about academic planning and post-high school planning.
• Professional development is critical to maintain and enhance a high quality school counseling program.
• Building relationships is the key to being a successful student advocate, guide, and liaison between all members of the school community.

Social workers at Libertyville High School provide support for students with a variety of issues which may be impacting on their day-to-day education.

Some of the ways we provide support for students:

• Providing support groups, groups that are topic based to the particular needs of our students.
• Advocating for student needs with teachers and consulting with educational staff
• Providing individual student counseling on a short term basis
• Providing educational opportunities around relevant social issues such as depression awareness, dealing with stress and anxiety, and seeking support in school.
• Crisis intervention services
• Participating in the identification and evaluation process for determining eligibility for special education students
• Networking with outside agencies and resources for referrals and crisis situations
• Classroom presentations about mental health and other topics
• Collaborate with local hospital providers to assist with transition of students back into the school setting.
• Provide need-based counseling referrals to families and students
• Assist with financial support for families in need
